Celebrating Movember at Vortexa: Things have been getting hairy…

As the month of November draws to a close, it marks the end of the annual Movember movement, a time dedicated to raising awareness of men’s mental and physical health, covering a wide range of issues from suicide prevention to prostate cancer.

Men are currently dying on average 5 years earlier than women for preventable reasons. A total of 10.8 million men around the world have been diagnosed with prostate cancer and 69% of all suicides are men, that’s equal to one man dying of suicide every minute.

The Movember initiative is designed to destigmatise difficult conversations and engage men in crucial conversations about improving their own well-being. In fact, the global Movember movement is aiming to reduce the number of men dying prematurely by 23% by the year 2023.

Fundraising, alongside raising awareness for men’s health projects, plays a huge role in the Movember cause. This is where Vortexa comes in! Several team members (we like to call them ‘Motexans') grew moustaches and took part in a sponsored dodgeball tournament in support of Movember, raising donations of over £3,086. With Vortexa vowing to match the number of all total donations, we successfully surpassed our personal target of raising £5,000, netting over £6,150 in total.

We spoke to some of the Motexan’s who took part in raising money for such a significant cause, to find out what the initiative means to them and why Movember is so crucially important to observe.

Sam Ingles

''Movember means stepping out of your comfort zone. Many men struggle with the important first step of sharing their problems, especially with other men. Removing the stigma around all things that lead to male suicide is an essential first step. A daft looking moustache, grown by men just like the rest of us, shows there are men out there willing to help.''

Constantin von Stegmann

''Everybody knows that cancer, mental health problems and suicide are real, but Movember serves as a reminder of how pervasive these issues are, particularly among young men.  To me, that's what it's all about - raising awareness.''

- Constantin Von Stegmann, Analytics Engineer

Nat Day

''What initially started as a bit of fun with my mates has started to mean a lot more to me in recent years. Having personally struggled with mental health, growing a moustache has become a symbol of willingness to talk to each other and start conversations around mental health. As a man, I’ve often found it difficult to open up about how I’m feeling, but with the great information, Movember provides - I feel it is becoming easier.

Movember’s main goal is to stop preventable death in young men. The money raised by growing a mo’ helps to fund projects across mental health and suicide prevention, prostate cancer and testicular cancer. This work is incredibly important as it helps stop men from dying before their time.''

Jay Maroo

''For me, Movember is a reminder to make a conscious effort to have conversations related to mental health. It's also great fun growing a comically bad moustache with others for very worthy causes.''

- Jay Maroo, Lead Crude Analyst

Since launching in 2003 with just 30 people taking part, this year over 5 million people around the world grew a moustache in support of Movember, bringing invaluable attention to all of the mental and physical issues our fathers, sons, brothers, husbands and friends are suffering from.

Since 2006, Movember has funded the development of 54 inventions, 70 new therapies and 107 diagnostic tests for prostate cancer; changing and saving the lives of countless men.

Vortexa is proud to play a part in positively impacting the lives of those who are suffering and would like to thank everyone who donated to our Motexans! Check out our dedicated Motexa fundraising page here - it's never too late to donate!
