Q & A with Clay Seigle: Managing Director, Americas

Clay is Managing Director of Vortexa’s business in the Americas. He brings 22 years of experience in the oil and gas industry and specialises in oil market intelligence. We wanted to discover what inspired Clay to join Vortexa, what key qualities he looks for in new hires and what his tips & tricks are for establishing a healthy work-life balance...


What inspired you to join Vortexa?

I found three things to be most compelling. First, the tremendous commercial potential for Vortexa’s business in the Americas region. Second, Vortexa’s advanced technology and the benefits it provides to our client community. Third, the esprit de corps of a smart, entrepreneurial group of colleagues that has fun working together across countries and regions.

How would you describe the culture at Vortexa?

Diverse - dozens of colleagues from many different countries and backgrounds. Practical - our people are laser focused on maximizing opportunities but without formal hierarchy and unnecessary structure.

Evolving - Vortexa is constantly growing with new colleagues joining and influencing the group culture for the better.

What are the key qualities you value in people and look for in new hires? 

Among the most important are likelihood to make meaningful contributions to our business within their areas of responsibility, a track record of success in previous posts, and ability to thrive in a startup environment characterized by constant change. I’m seeking new colleagues that will impress all our stakeholders -- clients, partners and colleagues -- with their professionalism and integrity.

What do you think are the top motivations for new joiners coming to Vortexa?

Our new colleagues are enthusiastic to participate in a nimble and fast-growing startup business, often in contrast with a larger or more established corporation. They’re also seeking professional growth and learning opportunities that come from servicing the exciting and fast-paced world of energy commodity trading.

How would you describe day-to-day life at Vortexa?

We spend our days working with clients and colleagues to get the word out about the benefits of our data and technology in energy trading. Every interaction is a two-way exchange, in which we’re learning from our counterparties as much as we’re explaining and promoting our capabilities.

In my tenth month at Vortexa and 23rd year in the oil industry, I'm still learning and growing with each passing day on the job. Everyone here strives to capture best practices and share results with each other to promote group success.

What tips and tricks would you have for establishing a work-life balance?

Balance is already fundamental to our culture and our colleagues are very good at managing their work requirements to achieve it. We cover for each other during time away, and offer each other the courtesy of advance notice to accommodate schedule changes. Vortexa is equipped with easy-to-use HR and administrative tools for requesting time away from work. And when off the desk or away from the office, forget about work and enjoy your time away.

How would you describe the structure and hierarchy at Vortexa?

Hierarchy at our small company is minimal. There are ten or fewer senior managers; all of them are completely down to earth and enthusiastic to connect with all colleagues. Likewise, organizational structure is typical for a startup, meaning just enough to deliver the needed results. Basic working units include regional Sales teams, Product Development, Market Analysis, Marketing, and Revenue Operations. In the Americas we’re rapidly building a team that will integrate all these functions and more.

Where do you predict Vortexa will be in five years’ time?

In 2025 Vortexa will be a required platform for energy commodity trading and related business.
