Q & A with Derrick Tee: Head of Sales, APAC

Derrick is Head of Sales, APAC at Vortexa, and heads up all commercial and partnership responsibilities within the APAC region.

Prior to joining Vortexa, Derrick started his career in the energy industry as an offshore engineer on drilling rigs and offshore support vessels with Kongsberg Maritime. Since then, Derrick has held research, sales and business development roles with IHS Markit and S&P Global Platts.

We wanted to find out what inspired Derrick to join Vortexa, what some of his biggest milestones have been to date and what day-to-day life really looks like for our Head of Sales in APAC...


What inspired you to join Vortexa?

I was attracted to Vortexa's leading position in providing the best-in-class system of trading and freight analytics tools to the energy industry. 

For most, tech and data science is the future of the oil trading and shipping industry. I would argue the future is here – and Vortexa offered me an opportunity to be a part of it.

What would you say is the most interesting aspect of your role?

Working with some of the brightest people in the industry – both internally and externally. To start off, Vortexa literally has colleagues with advanced degrees in rocket science e.g. our chairman holds a PhD in Quantum and Theoretical Physics, our CTO with M.Sc. in Theoretical Physics (and winner of multiple Mathematics, Physics and Computational Physics Olympiads).

Externally, our customers are some of the most successful energy traders tasked with important responsibilities of moving oil & gas cargoes worth hundreds of millions of dollars across the world every day. Making a trade could bring millions of dollars of profits to their companies - or conversely can also be true for the wrong trade.

Speaking to these smart people keeps me on my toes – a constant reminder to educate and improve myself every day.

 

What have been some significant milestone moments for you at Vortexa?

Setting up Vortexa’s first international office in Singapore from scratch to establishing ourselves as the leading provider of oil market analytics in Asia Pacific.

We are now proud to call some of the biggest shipping and oil trading companies in Asia Pacific our customers.

 

What does day-to-day life look like for you as Head of Sales, APAC?

I start my day reading the news headlines of the energy industry – what this means to our customers and how Vortexa’s analytics can best help them capture the most recent arbitrage trading opportunity and sidestep risk in their operations.

What key qualities make a Head of Sales successful?

Empathy towards customers. Ultimately, our customers are looking for a solution provider who understands their evolving market intelligence and risk management needs.

 

How would you describe the culture at Vortexa?

Everyone in Vortexa takes pride and ownership in what they do. The entrepreneurship spirit in the company allows every team member to voice their opinion and ideas to improve our products – as well as processes in the organisation.

What advice would you give people hoping to join Vortexa?

Be prepared to wear multiple hats. One’s job title does not fully grasp the evolving responsibilities of a Vortexan.
