Syed is our Lead Product Specialist based in the London office, responsible for looking after our clients and providing technical expertise for any questions or queries they might have. Before joining Vortexa Syed was at BP and worked in a number of roles across the oil supply chain in refining, shipping and trading.

Since joining Vortexa, Syed has also held the market analyst role and took the lead on a number of python led data analysis projects and provides technical expertise to any clients looking to upskill in these areas.

We wanted to find out what inspired Syed to join Vortexa, what some of his biggest milestones have been to date and what day-to-day life really looks like for our Lead Product Specialist in EMEA...

What inspired you to join Vortexa?

I was totally sold on the vision of the company in creating a more transparent energy market. Having been in the industry for a few years now, I know how challenging it can be to establish an independent source of truth in this opaque, challenging sector. So the message for building transparency really resonated with me.

''...The pace of growth at Vortexa is huge. If you want to work in a fast paced environment at the forefront of technology then this is the place for you.''

What would you say is the most interesting aspect of your role?

Speaking to our industry partners. I love speaking to all the different market players and discussing market views. It is great to see how our clients unlock the value of our data and use this to make trading decisions. Our clients are a great source of inspiration for us in where we want to take our product and we see them as partners on this journey.

What have been some significant milestone moments for you at Vortexa?

It’s hard to pick specifics, but having joined in the early stages of the company’s growth I take huge pride in how the company has grown and matured over the last few years. We’ve gone from a handful of smart people thrown together trying to make something special happen, to a maturing company, with a strong brand, a trusted voice and a rapidly growing client base.

What does day-to-day life look like for you as the Lead Product Specialist for EMEA?

Most of my time is spent talking to customers and delivering demos of the platform to prospective customers. As a product specialist you represent the voice of the customer to the rest of the organisation so it’s important we have our finger on the pulse when it comes to customer interactions and ensure we are relaying this feedback on to the internal teams. We also get involved in a lot of the product launch initiatives and as part of that we get to test out all the cool new features Vortexa is working on behind the scenes.

''...Our clients are a great source of inspiration for us in where we want to take our product and we see them as partners on this journey.''

What key qualities make a Lead Product Specialist successful?

The most important quality I look for in a new joiner is someone who is personable and articulate. This role involves breaking down complex concepts and explaining this to our clients, so an ability to take the complex and simplify it is paramount. Having some background in the energy markets is also a plus, as we deal with analysts and traders every day and you need to understand where they’re coming from and what they are trying to achieve. As well as this, I also look for good presentation skills and a strong interest in data and technology.

How would you describe the culture at Vortexa?

The culture at Vortexa is very energetic, fun and collaborative. We have a good group of like minded people looking to build something great. It’s great to work with such driven people who really take pride in their work. There is a genuine sense of everyone being in this together and pushing together towards a common goal. Everyone at the company takes complete ownership of what we do, because we all believe in the product and the vision behind it.

What advice would you give people hoping to join Vortexa?

The pace of growth at Vortexa is huge. If you want to work in a fast paced environment at the forefront of technology then this is the place for you.

Describe your working life at Vortexa in three words?

Fun, fast-paced and exciting!

In celebration of Pride month, Vortexa invited special guest Tony McCaffery, Founder and Managing Director of Diversity Co; the home of equity, diversity and inclusion consultancies to share his own experiences as a queer and mixed-race person of colour living with disabilities. We asked Tony to further educate us on the subject of intersectionality and most importantly, to articulate how best we can actively support LGBTQIA+ communities.
