Q & A with Will McIver - Sales Director, Americas

Will is a Sales Director looking after the US East coast region, who before joining Vortexa held various positions at the Intercontinental Exchange within the data services business department. His most recent role was as a Sales Executive covering the Midwest and East Coast territories. 

Based in Chicago, Illinois with his wife, Will is expecting his first child at the end of January. 

We wanted to find out what inspired Will to join Vortexa, what some of his biggest milestones have been to date and what day-to-day life really looks like for the Sales Director overseeing the Americas…


What inspired you to join Vortexa?

During the interview process it was clear through my multiple conversations that Vortexa was taking a unique approach to solving a very large problem. The company prides itself on taking a best in class technological approach while also layering in market knowledge via our team of industry experts, whose years of market experience help fine tune our offering so that it is unrivalled. In addition to that, it was hard to not be excited about the trajectory of the firm when listening to our executives outline Vortexa’s future. My experiences since starting have only reaffirmed what I learned in the hiring process.

What would you say is the most interesting aspect of your role?

Our interactions with clients and prospects continually keep this role interesting. Every company has a unique view and position in the market that presents challenges unique to them. It is our job to help them in identifying those problem areas and educate them on how Vortexa can assist in solving them. The consultative nature of this role also helps inform product enhancements within Vortexa and our ability to act on client feedback quickly further solidifies our value add in the market. 

 

What have been some significant milestone moments for you at Vortexa?

Personally, I would mark my first day as a milestone. This was the first time I had moved companies in my career while also being in the middle of a physical move from New York to Chicago. Those along with the remote reality of 2020 made the first day special as it proved that a growing company like Vortexa is not allowing uncontrollable circumstances dictate its trajectory. I will however look forward to some in person interactions with my co-workers.

What does day-to-day life look like for you as a Americas Sales Director at Vortexa? 

They have a tendency to be very different day over day, but in general early mornings are spent liaising with my commercial colleagues about any initial client needs or planning for upcoming meetings later in the day. Typically we will tailor presentations to reflect the most up to date market dynamics so we are not just speaking to Vortexa’s value add in a vacuum but relating it to tangible market use cases. A lot of client and prospect outreach is accomplished mid-day while after the market close is allocated to meetings with clients. End of day we usually circle back as a team to recap our days and ultimately start planning for the next. 

 

What key qualities make a Sales Director successful?

I think a true interest in the global commodity markets is essential. To be successful in the sales director role you ultimately need to fully understand the problems market participants face knowing full well those can vary dramatically depending on who we are speaking with. A large part of that is understanding the larger landscape of the industry so we can best discern how best to apply Vortexa’s data and analytics to them to solve their problems.

How would you describe the culture at Vortexa?

It is very fast paced at all levels. It seems like we are adding new colleagues weekly who immediately come in and start contributing. On the product side, it seems as if we are putting out new features multiple times a month which is always exciting from a commercial perspective.

 

What advice would you give people hoping to join Vortexa! 

Be willing to wear multiple hats, as the company culture welcomes it. Your voice will always be heard which is very refreshing and gives everyone a real sense of purpose within the company.
