A day in the life of Wanying Zhang, Freight Analyst
Ever wondered what a day in the life looks like at Vortexa for a Freight Analyst? We sat down with Wanying to find out what her day-to-day life looks like.

Discover what a day as a Freight Analyst at Vortexa is like with Dylan Simpson, including insights into his role and our company culture.
Dylan is a Freight Analyst, responsible for our weekly Freight Newsletter as well as the freight content in our weekly market briefings. Alongside his market analysis, Dylan also explores the freight API/SDK and creates new use cases for our analysts and clients. Prior to joining the company, Dylan worked as a Maths teacher. Fun fact: Dylan appears in a music video from his favourite band, Seether.
Each day varies, and the reason for that is the nature of the market we analyse. Nothing ever stays the same, and so, we can’t stay the same. To summarise, I get to solve a diverse set of client queries, as well as track the changes in the market and convert those changes into pieces of freight analysis.
The most interesting aspect for me would have to be the sheer amount of data available to work with. With so much data in our hands, we get to explore and experiment constantly as market analysts. This allows us to solve complex problems and come up with valuable, unique insight into the secretive oil and freight markets.
I was lucky enough to find Vortexa shortly after graduating from university in 2021. I was looking for an analyst role where I could work with interesting data every day, so naturally, Vortexa came onto my radar pretty quickly!
Above all else, a willingness to learn, not just from others but from your own exploration as well.
I love the collaborative nature of work at Vortexa. We share a lot of the work we do internally, which means that what gets published is high in quality, and portrays the perspectives of multiple Vortexa analysts across the globe.
Everyone, but so far most of my collaboration has been with the Commercial and Research & Development teams.
Breakfast, news updates, emails/Slack.
I really enjoy seeing our analysis play out in the real world. It often feels like I have had a ‘behind-the-scenes’ peek whenever I see a news story in the media.
