A day in the life of Delia He, Graduate Analyst

Delia is a Graduate Freight Analyst based in London, focussing on market and risk analysis for dirty and clean freight. Prior to joining the company, Delia worked in the Foreign Office. Delia's fact: Delia survived the 2004 Phuket tsunami, stranded on a balcony for 4 days surviving off the yellowfin her dad had caught!

What does day-to-day life in your role look like?

No one day is the same, for the reason that the energy and freight markets evolve every minute of every day. I typically start my day by catching up on freight news and crude news, keeping pulse of what’s happening in the market. The rest of my day is spent working with the vast datasets Vortexa has, extracting valuable insights for our clients.

What would you say is the most interesting aspect of your role?

Change is the only constant - which keeps me on my toes! Currently, a large part of what I do is tracking sanctioned Iranian and Russian barrels hitting the waters, and real-time global sailings of vessels in the dark fleet. Navigating these uncertain and opaque markets is thrilling.

What was your path to joining Vortexa?

Non-linear. I read a PPE degree in undergrad, fascinated by philosophy of mind and perception. That, mixed with a short stint in the army, led me down the path of conflict resolution for my Masters degree, where I focussed on natural resource-driven conflict. Unparalleled data-driven insights to the oil & gas markets seemed like the golden opportunity - found myself at Vortexa and since then, it’s widened my horizons so much more.

What do you like about the culture?

Open and autonomous! The team is driven to deliver the best results, and we do so by collaborating openly and transparently. At the same time, everyone takes full responsibility and control over the excellence of their work.

Who do you collaborate with?

The Analysis team primarily. We’re spread out all over the world, and it’s fascinating to brainstorm with colleagues who are such regional and domain experts in their respective fields. However, cross-functional collaboration with other teams, like R&D and Product Specialist happens very often. It’s a symbiotic learning process where our goal is to continuously improve our product offerings to customers!
