A day in the life of a Senior Freight Analyst

Ioannis is the Senior Freight Analyst at Vortexa. He studied Marine Engineering at the University of Strathclyde followed by an MSc in Shipping Trade and Finance at Bayes Business School. He is also a Board Member of the Shipping Professional Network London (SPNL).

Prior to joining the company, Ioannis worked at Affinity Shipping as a Shipping Trade Analyst.

Fun fact: Ioannis holds a motorboat licence, unfortunately, he has never had the opportunity to use it. Ioannis came close to piloting a VLCC at one point but the dimension requirements proved to be slightly larger than his motorboat licence would allow.

What does day-to-day life in your role look like?

Predictable when it comes to content generation but unpredictable when it comes to the intricacies of the market and the various projects I take on.

What would you say is the most interesting aspect of your role?

The volatility of the shipping and energy markets makes the role gripping in itself, but being able to utilise the technology and domain expertise available at Vortexa in order to produce insightful conclusions is what makes the difference. 

What was your path to joining Vortexa? 

Since graduating, I have been attracted by the complexity of the shipping and energy markets and have been keen to analyse the parameters that revolve around them. This is what propelled me to start my career by becoming an analyst. Seeing Vortexa’s unique approach to energy trade flows made my decision in joining a no-brainer!

What kind of qualities does a person need to have to succeed at Vortexa?

Inquisitive, open-minded, and fresh… Ask, listen, challenge and apply new ideas!

What do you like about the culture? 

What isn't there to like? A supportive international environment, that is composed of ambitious and intelligent people who are equally willing to voice their opinion and lend an ear. Oh, and know when to have fun when the time is right.

Who do you collaborate with?

Everyone, there’s no limit to the various positions that come together for the completion of a project. The collaboration between the Market Intelligence and R&D teams to marry technological advancements with domain expertise in order to develop a successful product is what I find most fascinating.

What are the first three things you do on a Monday morning?

Coffee goes first and is a must, read a book and then read the news.

What energises you most about working as a Senior Freight Analyst at Vortexa?

Both working with an exciting set of people and exploring new ideas to analyse the market from different and refreshing angles. You can’t have the same day in Vortexa twice!
